A tree, Antiaris toxicaria, of the mulberry family, common in the forests of Java and the neighboring islands, with poisonous secretions.
This word was borrowed from Malay, where it originally referred to a poisonous plant or tree. It entered English with the meaning of a deadly poison derived from such plants.
