A South American ruminant (Lama guanicoe), closely related to the other lamoids, the alpaca, llama, and vicuña in the family Camelidae.
The word comes from the Spanish term guanaco, which was borrowed from the Quechua language. Originally, it referred to a wild camelid native to South America.
