Sequoiadendron giganteum, a coniferous evergreen tree formerly in the genus Sequoia, now placed in Sequoiadendron.

The name comes from the language of the Southern Sierra Miwok people, who called themselves "Sequoia." It originally referred to the tribe itself before being applied to the giant redwood trees.
