The marine passage between Norway and Denmark, formerly also including the passage between Sweden and Denmark, comprising the Kattegat.
The word comes from Dutch in the 17th century. Originally a formal map name, it later distinguished the outer waters between Denmark and Norway from the inner sea known as Kattegat.
