The 15th letter of Classical and Modern Greek, and the 16th in Ancient and Old Greek.
The letter name comes from the Latin omicron, which was borrowed from Koine Greek to mean "little o" in contrast to omega ("big o"). Its use for designating stars by brightness began with Johann Bayer's 1603 work Uranometria.
